Nominatim

A permanent fallback tier for anything the data below can't resolve - most Canadian address and place-name searches on this site resolve against the National Address Register and GeoNames data instead (see Data Sources below). When neither has an answer, results come from Nominatim, using OpenStreetMap data.

Statistics Canada - National Address Register

Canadian address data comes from the National Address Register (catalogue no. 46-26-0002), vintage June 2026, an authoritative, georeferenced list of civic addresses across Canada, used under the Statistics Canada Open Licence. Yukon records specifically also carry information licensed under the Open Government Licence - Yukon.

Adapted from Statistics Canada, National Address Register, June 2026. This does not constitute an endorsement by Statistics Canada of this product. This dataset has been modified from the source: records were joined from Statistics Canada's separate Address and Location file-sets, filtered to records with a house number, a street name, a full-format postal code, and a coordinate, then re-sharded into files keyed by Forward Sortation Area. Records identified as PO boxes, postal station boxes, or general delivery were also excluded, since they identify a delivery destination rather than a place - about 2% of records nationally, though far more in some rural areas, up to roughly half of records in the most affected postal areas. Records with a missing or non-full-format postal code, or no available coordinate, were dropped, not estimated.

Used by the Postal Code and Address Mapper and this site's other Canadian tools that resolve a postal code or address to a location, including the Elevation Finder.

GeoNames

Place-name search - resolving a city, town, or landmark typed without a full address - uses data from GeoNames, used under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 License.

Adapted from GeoNames: filtered to current populated places and a notability-gated set of landmarks (parks, lakes, monuments, museums, and similar - a place or landmark must have an associated Wikidata entry or Wikipedia article to be included), then re-sharded into files keyed by the first two letters of each place name and hosted on this site's own infrastructure rather than fetched live from GeoNames on each search.

MRDEM - Natural Resources Canada

Elevation data comes from MRDEM (Medium Resolution Digital Elevation Model), a 30-metre national elevation model published 2025-06-20, used under the Open Government Licence - Canada.

Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence - Canada. Processed into map tiles hosted on this site; a water mask built from National Hydrographic Network inland waterbody data and Statistics Canada province/territory boundary data was applied so open water reads as water rather than MRDEM's own raw near-zero elevation value. One confirmed limitation in that mask is disclosed on the tool page itself: a land-inclusion error at Pangnirtung Fjord, Baffin Island.

Toilet Finder data - mixed sources

Public washroom locations combine verified open data from the City of Vancouver, City of Calgary, City of Edmonton, City of Ottawa, and City of Hamilton, each under that city's own open data licence; OpenStreetMap contributors, used under the Open Database Licence (ODbL) 1.0; and BC Parks facility data, used under the Open Government Licence - British Columbia.

The OpenStreetMap-derived portion of this dataset is itself published under ODbL at the same public URL this tool fetches from - see public/data/ca/toilets/ATTRIBUTION.md in the repository. This obligation is scoped to that one dataset; it does not extend to this site's code or any other dataset. BC Parks results are shown at park-level precision, not per-building - disclosed on the tool page itself.

Self-Hosted Vector Basemap

Most Canadian maps on this site use a self-hosted vector basemap built with Protomaps' open-source map styles, rendered from OpenStreetMap data and served from this site's own infrastructure rather than a third party's tile servers. If the vector basemap can't load - an older browser, no WebGL, or a failed request - the map falls back automatically to a hosted vector alternative, then to plain OpenStreetMap raster tiles, so a map is never left blank.

OpenStreetMap Tiles

The raster fallback above, and the default tile layer on any tool not yet migrated to the vector basemap, come from OpenStreetMap's own tile servers, subject to their tile usage policy. Every tier of this site's basemap, vector or raster, is ultimately built from OpenStreetMap's own map data.
